Welcome to the Year 6 Class Page

Mr Mawer, Mrs Todd and Mrs Bebb welcome you to Year 6. We look forward to showing you what we have been up to on this page!

Photography walk for Art inspiration!

We're going to be creating some Wetherby poster prints as part of our current Art topic, inspired by Yorkshire Artist Ellie Way! We thought about the landmarks that we have in Wetherby and which ones might find their way onto a postcard or print - we decided we'd go for a local area walk and photograph the landmarks we wanted to use in our own poster print! We look forward to sharing the finished pieces!

Ratio and proportion!

We used sweets to help us understand ratio and proportion in one of our WOW Maths lessons - children had to split the sweets into different flavours, then create and solve ratio questions and problems!

Northern Holocaust Museum

Year 6 visited Huddersifeld University for their annual trip to the Northern Holocaust Museum. The children learned about the Kindertransport project during WW2 and the stories of different children that were sent to the Yorkshire area as part of the project. They also heard stories from modern day refugees and took part in a presentation where a family member of a Kindertransport child was able to share their story in person!

Workout routines!

We had to set up our own fitness circuits for one of our Sprial PE lessons early on in the year - fortunately the weather was great!

Local History Tour!

We had the pleasure of being given a local history tour of Wetherby led by the Wetherby Civic Society! The tour lasted around 2 hours and we covered everything there is to know about our town - we were able to use some of what we learned during the tour in a whole class Kahoot quiz at the end of our local history topic!

Clay models of the Heart

As part of our 'Body Pump' topic, the children in Year 6 had to work in pairs to create their own model of the heart using clay, before painting them to identify the oxygenated and deoxygenated veins and arteries!

Spofforth Castle Visit!

As part of our local history topic, we walked to Spofforth Castle to find out about its history and how it became a ruin - we learned a little bit about the Civil War and the two sides who fought, and how it was used as a hideout after the Battle of Marston Moor. We played some games of hide and seek to reeanct the battle which everyone enjoyed, before having our lunch and walking back to school!

Rationing and fractions!

We combined Maths and History this half term to teach children about rationing, but through the medium of Maths! After learning about its importance and impact, the children were given a recipe for 'Carrot Cookies', however the recipe was given in fractions. The children had to calculate the fraction of the amount that they needed before baking their cookies - if the fractions were wrong, the cookies wouldn't have been right!

Maths escape rooms!

We've used escape room challenges a few times so far this term to help us check Maths understanding or to introduce new topics - from converting units to multiples and primes, they've been great fun and a real challenge!

PE this term!

We've had Leeds Rhinos in for some football coaching this term which the children have really enjoyed!

Maths relay races!

Another thing we've been trying this year is relay races to help solidify some mathematical concepts - we've used them for converting units and equivalent fractions which have been really fun!
