Understanding Refraction in Science

As part of our Light topic in Science, we had to learn about refraction!

We undertook some interesting experiments based around observing the changes that happen when refraction occurs, both through water as well as oil. This allowed us to look at how the density of the object can affect how light travels differently through different mediums.

Tennis Taster Sessions!

We had a couple of Wetherby Tennis Club's coaches come in this half term to deliver some tennis taster sessions which went down a treat! Some great tennis ball control was on show throughout and there were some great rallies completed by the end of our session!

Freestyle Football Workshop!

We were fortunate enough to have Jay Rosa (a freestyle footballer) come into school and deliver some freestyle football sessions.

The class had a fantastic time and managed to pull of some impressive balancing skills by the end of the session.

Pearl Harbour News Reports!

As part of our World War 2 History topic, we learnt about how Pearl Harbour impacted the war as a whole and the reasons why it took place. We then worked in groups to create and film a news report about the event itself!

Follow the QR code to watch them for yourselves!

Bikeability!

We recently had Cycle North in school to deliver some cycling proficiency, with the children completing their level 1 and 2 course with our 3 excellent instructors! The children had a fantastic time and represented the school brilliantly.

Local History Tour - Wetherby Civic Society!

We were fortunate enough to be given a local history tour of Wetherby at the end of our local history topic by the Wetherby Civic Society! We visited numerous history hotspots around Wetherby, including the Georgian Baths, Wetherby's first school house and learned about the history of our bridge and the secret cross!

Making use of our library!

Sometimes it's good to get out of the classroom and we've really been enjoying utilising the calm and comfy environment that our library has to offer! We've also been using it on Friday afternoon's to read with our Reception buddies!

Science - The Circulatory System

This half term we have been looking at the role that the heart plays within our body, particulalry focusing on the different aspects of the circulatory system. We've been using clay models to help us further understand the physical features of the heart, created slideshows to help us understand that there's more to blood than meets the eye, as well as using a basketball circuit to help us understand how the system actually works!

The Circulatory System - basketball circuit!

Getting hands on with our Maths!

We've been putting even more effort into applying our Maths skills and knowledge in different ways! We've managed to incorporate some DT and History skills with fractions, solved the Bletchley Codebreaking escape room, used Christmas chocolates to help us understand ratio as well as trying to utilise our amazing outdoor space!

Wonder - Autumn 1's reading text

During this half term's English lessons, we'll be reading RJ Palacio's Wonder.

It's our SEMH text and is a really powerful story about friendhip, bullying and overcoming barriers.

We'll be uploading some examples of stand out work that's been completed underneath!

Local History Study - The Knights Templar

As part of our Local History Study, we spent some time learning about the Knights Templar, who produced the first written records of Wetherby and gained royal permission to run our weekly market!

We worked in small groups to create some informative documentaries about what we had learnt - scan the QR code to see them!

Using P.E. for Place Value!

During our place value topic when learning about comparing and ordering numbers, the children designed some PE games where we could use a scoring system to create our 7 digit numbers, which we then used for our Maths task.

PE with Leeds Rhinos - Autumn 1 - Netball

Every Tuesday of Autumn 1, we have our Leeds Rhino coaches come in to deliver our PE slots. This half term we've been working on our netball skills, including key passes, fast feet movements and utilising spaces. Here are some pictures of what we've been working on.

Writing in Year 6 - Battle of Bannockburn Double Page Spreads

Writing is one of our key priorities in Year 6 this year and the children have been producing some excellent non-fiction pieces on the Battle of Bannockburn and how its outcome had an impact on Wetherby and Yorkshire at the beginning of the 14th century! Here are some examples!

Spofforth Castle - Local History Trip

On the 22nd of September we walked from school to Spofforth Castle, to have more of a 'hands on' kind of History lesson! We learnt about the origins of the castle, the link to William the Conqueror, the Percy family who owned the land as well as finding out what made the castle become a ruin during the English Civil War!

We had some time to explore the castle and recreated the battle between the Parlimentarians and Royalists!

Autumn Art - Pop Art!

We've been looking at different artists, techniques and inspirations as part of our Autumn pop art topic. We've looked at Andy Warhol, Roy Lichenstien and Keith Haring!

We'll post some pieces that we're particularly impressed with below!
