Miss Levine, Mrs Nolan and Mr Ivers welcome you to Year 3!

Here is our lovely, colourful Year 3 classroom!

Maths

Our first maths topic of the year is place value. Today, we have been partitioning numbers to 1,000.

Computing

We have been learning about networks, using the school network as an example. We recreated the school network using white string to indicate wired links between components and red string to indicate wireless links between components. Then, we went outside and used chalk to draw diagrams of how the internet works, again, using wired & wireless links between components.

Art

We have linked our artwork to the Stone Age and have learnt about and created our own cave paintings with pastels.

Science

We have been learning about different rocks. We walked around the school grounds to see what rocks we could find. We found the school roof is made of slate tiles and KS1 is made of sandstone bricks.

D&T

Everyone loved designing and making Stone Age style shoes. We were only allowed to use card and string to replicate the limited resources from the Stone Age, as they would have just used animal skin.

Did you know Stone Age people made their shoes shortly after killing the animal, when the hide was still soft and supple, making it easier to fit to their feet?!

School Visit to Stump Cross Caverns

We had an amazing time exploring the cave at Stump Cross Caverns. It made us think about what life was really like for the early Stone Age people. We aslso learnt about rockas and fossils and took part in a fossil dig.

Science

Pretending to be palaeontologists, we used cocktail sticks to pick out the chocolate chip fossils from cookies!

Maths

In pairs, we played a times table matching game. We had to turn two cards over to find the matching question and answer, while remembering where the cards were if they didn’t match when we turned them over!

Art

We have been learning about Andy Goldsworthy. We looked at his fantastic nature sculptures and used his work as inspiration to design and make our own, using nature items from around the nature area.

Science

We learnt about the main types of seed dispersal - animals, wind, water and explosion. We made paper spinners to show how seeds disperse in the wind. Then, Miss Levine filled a balloon with mini paper circles, to act as seeds, and she popped the balloon to show how seeds disperse by explosion.

PSHE - Children’s Mental Health Week

We completed various activities related to looking after our mental health. We wrote down our worries and things which make us happy; we looked at ways to relax and did some mindful colouring and reading and we talked about sharing our feelings and who we can talk to.

History

We have mummified tomatoes! First, we scooped out the seeds and washed the tomato. Then, we filled the tomato with a salt and bicarbonate of soda mixture. Next, we put more of the salt mixture in a cup and buried our tomato. Miss Levine left her tomato without the salt mixture, so we could compare. We willl check the tomatoes every few days and look at the appearance, texture and smell of the mummified and non-mummifed tomatoes.
